Glass Stones: The Hardy Yeomen of Go

Now you can choose among a variety of glass stones, a thickness for every taste and budget. Far superior to plastic, glass stones have a nice feel, cool and rounded, with a little heft to them. It's nice to have extra sets of real Go stones to take along, to have on hand when friends come over, or for casual everyday play.

Samarkand's 7mm/narrow stones fit the bill- always handy. Choose the 8mm/standard if you prefer a standard size stone with a bit more "there" there. 10mm is a big stone- not for the shy (or maybe perfect for the shy?) each set weighing in at over five pounds. Our stones come as full sets of at least 180 white and 180 black stones, imported directly from Korea. Each stone fits any standard Go grid.

Please note: Stone size may vary slightly within a few tenths of a millimeter, with the black stones being slightly larger to compensate for the optical illusion that makes black stones look smaller. All our stones are the standard around 21.5mm in diameter except for our 7mm/Narrow Glass Stones (#G1C), which are around 20mm. Any of the stones, however, will fit a standard go board.

Quantity:
7mm/Narrow Glass stones #G1C $15.95

Quantity:
8mm Glass stones #G3C $24.95
Quantity:
10mm Glass stones #G2C $49.95

Note: Go can be difficult, but go equipment shouldn't be!

All our sets have at least 180 white and 180 black stones, but this is a matter of convention -- it's no problem to play if you have a few more or less than 180 of each color, no need to worry if you lose one, or several.

You don't have to be particularly careful with this kind of glass, glass stones are the most commonly used go stones, seeing heavy duty and being dropped constantly on the hard floors of go clubs all over Korea. They are not very fragile and any chips are not super sharp.

Occasionally there will be a chipped or defective stone in a new glass stone set from Korea, as in order to keep the cost much lower than the double you can expect to pay for Japanese glass stones, the Koreans don't have take the extra steps the Japanese do in screening or packing them. We felt that the extra steps to avoid any damaged stones were not worth the extra cost, as you will receive a full set of undamaged stones in any case.
